The Grand Junction Colorado Temple
Announced April 4, 2021 by President Russell M. Nelson. Groundbreaking April 16, 2022, presided over by Elder Chi Hong (Sam) Wong. Open house: September 11-27, 2025. Dedicated October 19, 2025, by Elder Jeffrey R. Holland. Floor area: 29,630 square feet on a 7.93-acre site. Location: Horizon Drive and North 12th Street in Grand Junction, Mesa County, Colorado. Exterior finished in Portuguese granite. The temple serves the LDS communities of western Colorado, eastern Utah, and adjacent areas. Before this dedication, western slope Colorado members drove to the Denver Colorado Temple (150+ miles each way) or the Moab area. The Grand Junction Temple reduces temple access dramatically for tens of thousands of members.
Grand Junction Real Estate Overview
Grand Junction is the largest city on Colorado’s Western Slope, with a population of approximately 65,000. The economy centers on energy (oil shale, natural gas), healthcare, agriculture, and recreation tourism. Real estate: Median home sale price approximately $405,000-$417,500 (2024-2025 data). Significantly more affordable than Front Range Colorado markets: Denver metro median $600K+, Fort Collins $500K+. The Redlands area commands the highest prices ($699K median single-family). Downtown Grand Junction more affordable ($346K median). For the LDS family considering western Colorado: Grand Junction offers temple community access at below-Front Range prices with the additional advantage of Colorado National Monument and world-class outdoor recreation immediately adjacent.
The Western Slope LDS Community
The LDS community on Colorado’s Western Slope is established and distinctly Western in character: ranching and farming families with generations in the area, energy sector professionals, and the outdoor recreation community. Multiple stakes serve the Grand Junction area. The ward activity level is strong — western Colorado LDS communities tend to be highly engaged because the member-to-population ratio means each active member is genuinely needed for the ward to function. For the LDS family that loves mountains, desert, and outdoor lifestyle over the suburban LDS density of Utah Valley: Grand Junction provides genuine community with a very different landscape.
Ryan Brown, Principal Broker & CEO Own Luxury Homes®
“The family that calls me after the Grand Junction Temple dedication has figured out something most LDS buyers haven’t: there is now a fully operating temple in a Colorado city where the median home costs $417,000. That combination did not exist before October 2025. Grand Junction is not a consolation prize for families who cannot afford Utah. It is a genuine choice for families who love western Colorado. The distinction matters.”
