San Juan Basin energy economy — oil and natural gas industry supports stable employment for LDS families

Farmington, New Mexico became a temple community on August 17, 2025, when Elder Neil L. Andersen dedicated the Farmington New Mexico Temple as the 208th operating temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The dedication confirmed what local members already knew: the Four Corners LDS community is real, established, and growing. For real estate purposes, Farmington offers something increasingly rare — a genuine LDS temple community at prices dramatically below any comparable market in Utah, Idaho, or Arizona.

The Farmington New Mexico Temple

The Farmington New Mexico Temple was announced April 4, 2021 by President Russell M. Nelson. Groundbreaking: April 30, 2022. Open house: July 17 through August 2, 2025. Dedication: August 17, 2025, by Elder Neil L. Andersen of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles. Floor area: 29,066 square feet. Single-story design with central spire. Location: Farmington, San Juan County, New Mexico. The temple serves Latter-day Saint members across the Four Corners region — northwestern New Mexico, southwestern Colorado, southeastern Utah, and northeastern Arizona. Before this dedication, members in the Farmington area drove to the Albuquerque Temple or the St. George Temple — each over 3 hours away. The Farmington Temple reduces temple drive time to under 20 minutes for thousands of members in the San Juan Basin.

The Four Corners LDS Community

The LDS community in the Four Corners area is multigenerational and deeply rooted. Members include Anglo LDS families who have been in the area for generations, significant Navajo Nation LDS membership (the Navajo Nation has one of the highest LDS membership rates of any Native American community), and families connected to the San Juan Basin energy economy. Ward activity is strong. The community is distinctly different from urban Utah LDS culture — more agricultural, more rural, more independent in character — but the covenant community bonds are the same.

Farmington Real Estate: Affordability Unmatched in LDS Markets

San Juan County median home price: approximately $202,100 (2024 Best Places data). For comparison: Utah County median $500K+. Gilbert AZ $550K+. Boise $450K+. Farmington offers LDS temple community real estate at a fraction of the cost of any comparable market. The tradeoff: the San Juan Basin economy centers on oil and gas, agriculture, and retail serving the Four Corners region. Professional career diversity is more limited than in Utah’s tech-driven markets. For remote workers, retirees, small business owners, and energy sector employees: Farmington is a compelling proposition that no other real estate brand has recognized. Home types: primarily single-family detached, 3-4 bedrooms, 1970s-1990s construction. $200K-$350K buys a solid family home in an established neighborhood.

Who Is the Farmington LDS Real Estate Buyer

(1) Remote workers priced out of Utah: the family that wants LDS temple community but cannot afford $500K in Provo. Farmington now offers temple within 20 minutes at $200K-$350K. (2) Energy sector employees: oil and gas, pipeline, and natural resource industry professionals based in the San Juan Basin. Many are LDS. (3) Retirees from northern New Mexico or Colorado: Farmington’s mild four-season climate and low cost of living attract active retirees who want temple access without Utah prices. (4) Navajo Nation LDS families: members from the surrounding Navajo communities who work or do business in Farmington and want to live near the temple.

Ryan Brown, Principal Broker & CEO Own Luxury Homes®

“Farmington is the discovery market of LDS real estate. Before August 2025, it had no temple and no real estate content serving the LDS community specifically. The dedication changed both. A family that tells me they want an LDS community at prices they can actually afford, and is willing to consider New Mexico, gets the Farmington conversation. The temple is beautiful. The prices are real. The community has been there for generations.”
