On July 10, 2025, UNC Health and Duke Health — two of North Carolina’s most powerful health systems, and historically fierce competitors — announced a joint partnership to build North Carolina’s first freestanding children’s hospital at the Veridea development in Apex. The selection was made after evaluating more than 15 sites across the Triangle.

The 500-bed hospital on 230 acres will have a surgical center, medical office building, and space for hotels, restaurants, and shops for families visiting from across the state. The groundbreaking is expected in 2027, with opening in the early 2030s. The 8,000 jobs represent a concentration of highly credentialed, high-salary healthcare professionals — pediatric surgeons, specialists, nurses, researchers, and administrators — arriving in Southwest Wake County in waves through the 2030s.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the NC Children's Hospital definitely happening?
UNC Health and Duke Health — two of North Carolina's most powerful and financially stable health systems — made the joint announcement July 10, 2025. More than 15 sites were evaluated. Apex was selected for ease of highway and air access, alignment with local government, ample room to grow, and proximity to both UNC and Duke. The hospital is dependent on state budget appropriations, but the institutional commitment from two major health systems is the strongest possible signal short of a shovel in the ground.
What types of jobs will NC Children's Hospital create?
A 500-bed freestanding children's hospital creates a wide range of high-salary positions: pediatric surgeons ($400K-$800K+), specialist physicians ($200K-$500K), hospitalists, anesthesiologists, nurses ($60K-$120K), advanced practice providers, hospital administrators ($100K-$300K), researchers, medical technologists, and support staff. The 8,000-job estimate encompasses the full spectrum. The concentration of healthcare professionals earning above-market salaries is the primary real estate demand driver.
