Samuel Bateman sentenced to 50 years in December 2024 — ongoing legal action confirms abuse accountability
If you have left the FLDS or another coercive fundamentalist community, this guide is for you. Not for researchers or observers. For you. The path to independent home ownership starts with the basics: safe housing, identification documents, financial system access, and credit building. From those foundations, home ownership — genuinely yours, in your name, with a deed that no community leader can reassign — becomes achievable within 12-24 months of leaving.

Immediate Steps After Leaving
(1) Safe housing first: many communities have emergency housing resources for people leaving coercive groups. SafePassage in Utah (safepassageutah.org) specializes in housing and transition support for people leaving fundamentalist communities. Local domestic violence shelters and transitional housing programs also provide immediate housing for people in unsafe situations. (2) Identity documents: if you do not have a Social Security card, birth certificate, or state ID, these are the first priority. Utah Vital Records, Social Security Administration offices, and advocate organizations can help obtain them. Without these documents, banking, employment, and eventually mortgage applications are not possible. (3) Open a bank account: a basic checking account at a mainstream bank or credit union is the foundation of financial system access. Many banks offer basic accounts without minimum balance requirements.
Building the Foundation for Home Ownership
(1) 6-12 months after leaving: build credit. Open a secured credit card ($200-$500 deposit). Use it for small purchases and pay in full monthly. FICO reactivates within 6 months. (2) 12-18 months: stable housing and employment. FHA lenders want to see 12 months of consistent employment. Documented rental history (lease agreements, canceled checks) also strengthens the mortgage application. (3) 18-24 months: mortgage qualification. With 12 months of employment, a scoreable FICO above 580, and a 3.5% down payment, FHA loan qualification is achievable. HUD-approved housing counselors (hud.gov/counseling) can provide free guidance through the entire process. (4) Down payment assistance: Utah Housing Corporation offers up to $20,000 for first-time buyers meeting income limits. Many counties and cities have additional programs.

“The person who calls me six months after leaving the FLDS and asks about buying a house gets an honest answer: not yet, but soon. Here is what we build over the next 18 months. Credit. Employment documentation. Down payment savings. And then the day comes — and it always comes for the people who stay the course — when we sign the closing documents and the deed goes into their name. That moment is one of the most meaningful in my work.”
