The four systems that kept Babcock Ranch powered and intact during two major hurricanes:
System
What It Does
Ian/Milton Outcome
Underground utilities
All power lines, internet, and utility infrastructure buried below grade — no above-ground lines to be downed
Zero wind damage to utility infrastructure in both Ian (Cat 4) and Milton
Solar + battery storage
870-acre FPL solar farm (650,000 panels, 150 MW) with battery backup — when regional grid disrupted, battery provides continuity
Community maintained power while surrounding areas were without electricity for days/weeks
25–30-ft elevation
Babcock Ranch built 25–30 feet above sea level vs coastal communities at or near sea level
No significant storm surge flooding; engineered flow-ways managed rainfall runoff
Retention ponds + flow-ways
Giant retention ponds and designed drainage routes manage stormwater — streets engineered to absorb floodwater
Minimal flooding; homes protected from water intrusion
Concrete block construction (DiVosta)
TerraWalk by DiVosta uses CMU (concrete masonry unit) construction reinforced with steel rebar
Additional structural resilience vs wood-frame construction

I had clients who lost their roof in Cape Coral during Hurricane Ian. Three months later they found Babcock Ranch. They bought the first time they visited. The explanation they gave me: ‘We’re not going through that again. We want to live somewhere that was engineered for this.’ That’s not a marketing response. That’s a Category 4 hurricane changing how people think about where they live in Florida.
The Solar System — What It Actually Is and Isn’t
The FPL Babcock Ranch Solar Energy Center and FPL Babcock Preserve Solar Energy Center together produce approximately 150 megawatts from 650,000 panels on 870 acres of land. The system is connected to FPL’s standard distribution grid — it is not a fully independent private microgrid. The battery storage component is what delivered power continuity during Ian and Milton when the broader regional grid was disrupted. The solar supply feeds the community first; excess is sold back to the regional grid. When clouds reduce solar output, the community pulls from the FPL grid in standard fashion. The hardening of the distribution infrastructure within Babcock Ranch (underground utilities, reinforced distribution network) is the other half of the resilience story.
